Gifts are a wonderful way of telling special people they matter, that we love them and appreciate any little contribution they have made to our lives. It can be a gesture made by a subordinate to his boss, a father to his son, among friends, siblings etc. However old fashioned it may be, the idea of gift-giving will never rule out.
Gift giving has been a huge binding force among human society since time immemorial. In ancient times, for the sake of status quo, gift-giving was a prominent trait among leaders. They started from branches and progressed to pieces of cake to seek peace and prosperity in the coming years. Now gift-giving is closely associated with special occasions and holidays or simply, for the sake of it!
Living in the 21st century and enveloped in the blanket of hi-tech products and ever growing machinery, our gifts have also become that way. Though much of the gesture is of course, occasion-centric, yet we prefer to give elaborate and costly items. This may also be to maintain a status quo like our predecessors before us.
Christmas and other festive occasions demand a miscellaneous assortment of gift items that are generally suited to everyone in the family. You look into all sorts of things, ranging from clothing, accessories and then more standard gifts like chocolates and flowers. Grandpa needs a new stick and grandma would love a new woollen sweater! Christmas gift-shopping is by far the most enjoyed activity among people in the western world. It is an occasion of love and joy and reunion. The air has a lovely feel of déjà vu.
Gift giving is carried out on a regular basis as well. Making your boss happy by getting him his favourite cologne, or making up for a fight by getting your friend a beautiful jewellery piece and the list is endless! This gesture remains an integral part of our social culture and although the nature of gifts may have changed, the core essence remains the same.
For instance paintings on walls were a fashion of yesterday, which while we respect, has now been substituted in the form of canvas print deals. These are images transferred digitally onto canvas – can be a favourite painting or a photo collage, making for a perfect gift. Canvas printings techniques have become quite a fad in this highly tech-savvy age, where people are constantly on the look-out for new and unique ideas!
It is safe to say, we have come a long way with the idea of gift-giving and it is sure to stay, till as long as human race lives on.
